Hustling has always come easy to Corey 'Hustle Simmons' Hill. Transplanted freshly from Boston to down south for his baseball acumen, Hustle was getting his game on with an athletic scholarship and a clear vision of a dream job in the entertainment business. The ambitious and charismatic DJ realized phase one of his plan when he walked through the doors of radio station, WPAL in Charleston, South Carolina and asked for a chance to intern at the station. He knew that if he could just get his foot in the door there he could knock down the walls of the music industry and blow the game wide open! In the beginning, Hustle was pretty much on his own navigating the rough waters of broadcasting, learning everything from the boards to sales to promotions. Juggling his internship at the station, studying for his communications degree and a part time job with a local jeweler, hustle became more than Corey Hills middle name it actually became a way of life. Soon his magnetic personality provided him with an opportunity to fill in when one of the regulars couldnt make a shift. Hustle proudly remembers that moment. My first radio check was $13.74 for filling in. Finishing his last year of school Hustle secured the overnight slot.

Fate seemed to move his career on the fast track when 1 week before graduation the afternoon air personality resigned. Living up to his namesake, Hustle arrived at the station fresh dressed in a suit with briefcase in hand and submitted his resume and air check. After working in his new position for a few months Corey pitched an idea to his PD to play hip hop and R&B every Sunday from 12-6. Flipping the format and shaking things up in the Bible belt, Hustles new programming idea worked like a charm, he also got promoted to Mix Show Director. He also started doing parties and bringing his radio game to the club scene. The parties got so popular that soon Hustle was holding it down with several joints a week when he got another brilliant idea. After 5 or 6 parties I figured why dont I just buy some turntables and DJ myself? So I practiced in my room for months. Hustle had to test his skills earlier than anticipated when his DJ couldnt make a scheduled party appearance. Hustle loaded up his crates, took a deep breath and a star was born. I was nervous. Before that I hadnt played for anyone else but it was fine. I just played the hits and did a lot of drop outs. There was a lot of crowd participation that night. Eventually, Hustles name became synonymous with hip hop in the south. He was responsible for giving early air play and helping to break some of the biggest southern artist, TI, Ludacris, Pastor Troy, Ying Yang Twins, Lil John and he even went on the road with Petey Pablo. He also did a major cameo in Mystikals smash video, Shake Ya Ass, Jim Crows Holla At A Playa and KRS-Ones Step Into A World. He even won Dirty South DJ of the Year Award at the Mix Show Power Summit in 2001. He got called again to make things happen from station WIIZ and when the PD asked Corey to do the morning show for one week by that Monday he was killin it! One year later, Corey was doing everything at WIIZ besides sweeping the floors. Besides handling multiple responsibilities and air shifts he developed a night time show called the Corey Hill Projects. A fictitious place where listeners could call in and claim their own building, Its all about the listener theyre the superstars. Without them you (DJs) wouldnt be anything.

Bouncing again Hustle moved to WWBZ to become the station Program Director and fill the afternoon air slot. Just when things were getting really crazy, Hustle went back home to Boston to spend time with his family and got another clarion call while driving back to SC. I was half way home when JAMN 94.5 in Boston called and asked me to do an on-air audition. That weekend the hometown hero returned and was on the air every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hes also the current host of the longest running video show in Boston, Strictly Hip Hop. JAMN is the perfect station for the second phase of the take over. A lot of radio legends came from Boston and I really want to maximize my stay here. Hes already appeared twice on BETs hip hop show the Basement and has a nice plug in the Source magazines DJ issue and he does clubs several nights a week in Boston and South Carolina. Who knows how far Corey Hustle Simmons Hill ambition and talent will take him in the game but one thing is for sure with talent and an amazing work ethic, you cant knock the hustle. Corey also has always had a side business in Marketing and Promotions working closely with the record labels to handle regional promotions. His current accounts include such prestigious names as Interscope, Roc-a-fella, Universal and the Playboy TV Network. Hustle explains why he started his company, Top of the Hill Marketing and Promotions. Because there was a real opportunity for someone in this market to make the most of the promotions game, the more knowledge I have about the biz Im in the better that makes me at everything I do.
